Neuropsychological Assessment

Neuropsychological Assessment

A Neuropsychological Assessment is a hybrid assessment that combines a complete psychological assessment with comprehensive neurocognitive testing. This combination allows Neuropsychological Assessments to clarify the mental health factors and the neuromedical factors that may be contributing to your cognitive, behavioural, and functional challenges.

A Neuropsychological Assessment is often undertaken when a person has questions about memory difficulties, changes in concentration, or problems with planning, reasoning, or other “higher-order” thinking.

Neuropsychological Assessment is the “gold standard” assessment for determining the impacts of brain injury (e.g., concussion/mTBI, stroke, brain tumour, etc.), clarifying the course of cognitive change with neurodegenerative conditions (e.g., dementia, MS), outlining the impact of neuroatypicality on your lived experience (e.g., ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder), or detailing the cognitive impacts of mental health conditions. For some, a Neuropsychological Assessment can be helpful for establishing a baseline of functioning in case a comparison point is needed in future.

A Neuropsychological Assessment typically includes the following (though the actual scope of services will be determined collaboratively):

  • Clinical Interview(s) – 2.5 hours, in person or virtual

  • Neurocognitive testing – 4 to 6 hours, in person

  • Completion of psychological questionnaires- in person or virtual

  • Review of medical/mental health records (as available and needed)

  • Collateral interview with spouses/parents (as authorized and needed)

  • Assessment report preparation

  • Feedback meeting to review the assessment outcomes

If you are interested in learning more about how a Neuropsychological Assessment may fit your needs, please contact us. We will be happy to speak with you about our services and what may be most practical and helpful.

As with all of our assessment services, a Neuropsychological Assessment will result in a report for you that outlines any relevant diagnoses, an explanation of your challenges, and helpful recommendations for your next steps.
