Psychotherapy

Counselling & Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, or “talk therapy”, is the process of exploring your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours in the context of your life and stressors.

The aims of Psychotherapy can differ from person to person and from time to time depending on need. Psychotherapy may include exploring one’s history to understand how it impacts their current functioning or it may be more present-oriented and emphasize skill development. For many, Psychotherapy entails a bit of both. With that said, Psychotherapy does not always require a desire to change. At times, what is most healing is simply having the space to share about one’s experiences openly and without judgment. Whatever your goals may be, we will work with you to find a meaningful way forward.

Psychotherapy is not a “one size fits all” endeavour. There are many approaches to psychotherapy and some may fit with your goals, symptoms, and outlook better than others.

At TPNS, we describe our generally approach to treatment as integrative and holistic. What that means is that we understand the evidence base and rationale for a wide variety of therapeutic approaches and activities, and we use this knowledge to craft a personalized and flexible treatment plan that meets you where you are.

Core approaches represented at TPNS are as follow:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Helps you change your relationship to difficult thoughts and emotions while finding ways to live in accordance with personal values.

  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Helps you identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress.

  • Mindfulness-Integrated CBT (MiCBT)

Combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with mindfulness practices to enhance emotional regulation and self-awareness.

  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

Uses mindfulness-based exercises and principles to reduce stress and manage chronic pain, anxiety, and emotional distress.

  • Exposure-based therapies (e.g., Prolonged Exposure)

Gradually helps you face feared situations or memories to reduce avoidance and overcome trauma and anxiety disorders.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Facilitates processing of traumatic memories using visualization and bilateral movement to reduce their emotional impact.

  • Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFT)

Explores and harmonizes the different “parts” of your psyche to promote self-compassion and healing.

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Teaches skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness.

  • Interpersonal and Existential therapies

Focuses on understanding self, morality, and meaning in the context of relationship patterns and personal responsibility.

Psychotherapy may be conducted virtually or in person depending on preference and availability.
